The university is the top Christian school in the Northwest and joins Wheaton and Westmont as highest-rated Christian schools
Newberg, OR (Vocus) August
20, 2010 - For a third straight year, Forbes ranks George Fox as one of
the top Christian colleges in the country and as the top Christian
college in the Pacific Northwest in its August 2010 "America's Best
Colleges" rankings.
Forbes ranked 600 of the roughly 4,000 colleges in the United
States and based its rankings on "the quality of the education they
provide, the experiences of the students and how much they achieve,"
according to the Forbes website. George Fox ranked No. 134 overall and
joined Wheaton (No. 59) and Westmont (No. 81) as the top institutions in
the 110-member Council for Christian Colleges & Universities.
Among
Oregon schools, George Fox was ranked second, behind only Reed College
(No. 69). Other Oregon schools listed included Pacific (No. 171), Lewis
& Clark (No. 180), Willamette (No. 187), Linfield (No. 236), the
University of Oregon (No. 259) and Oregon State University (No. 350).
Williams
College of Massachusetts earned the top spot overall, ahead of
Princeton, Amherst College and the United States Military Academy.
Rounding out the top 10 were the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
Stanford University, Swarthmore College, Harvard University, Claremont
McKenna College and Yale University.
The Forbes
rankings and methodology are posted online at the Forbes.com site.
According to Forbes, its ranking system is designed to stress the
outputs of a college education rather than the inputs stressed by the
U.S. News and World Report college rankings.
Forbes
considered student satisfaction (27.5 percent), postgraduate success
(30 percent), student debt (17.5 percent), four-year graduation rate
(17.5 percent) and competitive awards (7.5 percent) to compile its
results. Forbes conducts its own research from third-party sources and
did not use data supplied directly by George Fox or any other
institution. The Forbes ranking was created by Richard Vedder, an
economist at Ohio University, and the Center for College Affordability
and Productivity.
George Fox also rated high in
college rankings released this month by U.S. News & World Report
and The Princeton Review. U.S. News placed the university in its top
tier in the "Best National Universities" category, while The Princeton
Review honored George Fox as one of its "Best in the West" schools for a
seventh straight year.
The honors come as
George Fox prepares to welcome its largest-ever incoming class. More
than 600 new undergraduate students - about 500 freshmen and
approximately 160 transfer students - will join the university this
fall, according to Ryan Dougherty, director of undergraduate admissions.
George
Fox University is ranked by Forbes as the top Christian college in the
Pacific Northwest and among the highest Christian colleges in the
country. George Fox is the only Christian university in the Pacific
Northwest classified by U.S. News & World Report as a national
university. More than 3,300 students attend classes on the university's
campus in Newberg, Ore., and at teaching centers in Portland, Salem, and
Redmond, Ore., and Boise, Idaho. George Fox offers bachelor's degrees
in more than 40 majors, degree-completion programs for working adults,
five seminary degrees, and 12 master's and doctoral degrees.
